With full-on spring weather right around the corner, we've been thinking about making some small exterior updates to our home to amp up the curb appeal. It seems like my project agenda is always long but a new front step and railings top the list for us this spring.  However, you don't need to order a cement truck to improve the look of your home.  In fact, it can be pretty simple.  Here are five ways to start this spring:

 1. Add some greenery - Inject some life into your home's exterior by adding some potted plants to your front porch or deck.  I love the simplicity of these simple ferns in black pots.  They're locally available and are an inexpensive and easy-to-care-for option that should look great all summer long.  Flanking your door with matching pots lends a classic feel or go more contemporary by offsetting one pot, or a group of pots, off to the side. This update is so quick and easy and let's face it people, you don't have to be a master gardener to pot a couple plants and set them by your front door! 

2.  Frame it out - Many front doors (including my own!) are void of any additional trim besides what comes with the door itself.  If you're up for a bit of a project, consider adding decorative trim to beef up your front door and help make it the focal point of the front of your house.  The trim could be the same color as your window trims, the same color as your front door, or something completely different.  I love this facade by Robert Nehrebecky Architects and the way the off-white trim in this example creates a welcoming entry.  Also, the time-worn condition of the steps and railings proves that you can mix new updates with existing features and not stress over the 'perfect match'.

3. Update your patio furniture - The summer sun and our lovely Saskatchewan wind can be hard on outdoor furniture and it can get looking ratty if not taken care of, but, great looking deck furniture definitely adds to your home's curb appeal and makes you want to spend more time outside.  I've often wished for a south facing front porch to have a morning coffee so if you've got one, you better get some furniture out there STAT!  There is so much variety in patio furniture to choose from and several of our local businesses have some fantastic options.  If you're planning to order a custom set, now is the time so you can ensure it's here by the heat of summer.  If you'd like some feedback in choosing the style, size, and color that best works with your home's exterior, don't be afraid to send Farmer's Daughter Interiors an email.

4. Switch out your hardware - It's amazing the difference that small changes can make to your home's overall curbside feel.  I picked the example below because the house and fence feel very typical and could be found in any community but paired with striking hardware, this home's back alley packs its own punch.

5. It's all in the details - We're all about accessorizing the inside of our homes but why not the outside? Add some small accessories to your front porch or back yard this spring and nothing says they can't be functional.  The hanging lanterns on this gorgeous porch are a great way to add some extra light without hard-wiring additional permanent light fixtures. Plus, nothing beats the glow of a natural flame after sundown to bring some serious 'cozy' to your backyard. For your home or cabin at the lake, use citronella candles to keep mosquitoes and other pests away from your evening soirée. 

It's worth making an investment in our homes - it's where we grow up, where we forge relationships with friends and family, and where we go to relax.  Besides adding value to your property, upgrading your home's exterior makes it a place where you'll want to spend more time, and to me, that's totally worth it.
