PROJECT REVEAL // THE SUNROOM PROJECT

This light-filled sunroom belongs to a young, grain-farming family of five located just outside of Swift Current, SK.  I've known them as casual family friends for years so naturally, I was thrilled when the clients approached me to help them with their project.  We started collaborating while I was working at a local furniture store and when I left my job to start Farmer's Daughter Interiors, it wasn't long before they got in touch to move forward with their project. Over the next nine months or so, I worked closely with the clients to achieve their dream room.  If you've been following along on Instagram at #FDsunroomproject, you'll know the big reveal has been a long time coming... enjoy!

This couple knew they wanted a bright and casual space they could enjoy as a family year-round and we decided on a modern farmhouse style with bohemian flair and mid-century undertones, that blended well with the rest of the home.  The space you see here was originally a U-shaped outdoor deck space that together we revamped into this stunner of a sunroom.

When looking for inspiration for this space, I was drawn to the idea of using patterned tile in a natural, terracotta material that would tie in well with the home's existing brick exterior.  Although I had never seen patterned tile used in a full-height fireplace application, I was thrilled when the clients loved the idea. We knew if we kept the palette neutral enough, the pattern wouldn't overwhelm the space and a Balkan-inspired, hand-painted print would soften harsher surfaces found in the glass ceiling and concrete-look tile floors.

Reproduction Serge Mouille wall lights and clean-lined, wood-armed chairs lean towards a mid-century vibe while keeping the room feeling relaxed and comfortable. A bohemian wall hanging, done by a local artist, injects some serious personality and provides a punch of black against the white 'shiplap' walls seen throughout.

One of the main challenges in this space was designing the fireplace tile layout - we knew there could be no cuts and no half-patterns - therefore, the framing of the wood-burning fireplace had to be precisely calculated to coordinate with the widths of the tile, before the tile was even delivered on-site. We had a custom mantle made by One Prairie Craftsman using reclaimed barn-wood from the local area. Because the entire space was originally an exterior deck, another challenge in this project was incorporating the existing windows that were once exterior but now open into the sunroom, without drawing too much attention their way.

One of my favourite details of the project are the wall planters we ordered through Wildflower Florist - they just seemed to fit the room's aesthetic so well and I love the way they inject life into the space. A few vintage accents and carefully selected throw pillows finish off the look and provide just the warm and welcoming space this family was looking for.

I hope you've enjoyed The Sunroom Project reveal! Please feel free to share and comment on your favourite pieces in the room!
