We’re very excited to be sharing a completed kitchen and dining room renovation from our Oakmoore project with you today!
This family home is located less than an hour from Swift Current, SK and nestled into the rolling hills of the beautiful Prairies we enjoy here in Saskatchewan. Our clients came to Farmer’s Daughter Interiors looking to make better use of their open plan kitchen + dining space while creating a bright, airy feeling kitchen where they could enjoy hosting their grown children (and their families) for weekend get togethers and large family holiday meals.
Read on for how we worked with our clients to bring this renovation to completion.
Being full time grain farmers, our clients make full use of their home during busy weeks on the farm and were really craving a classic kitchen that would feel timeless and fit in well with the rest of the house. Their current kitchen was feeling dark and dated to them and had a large fridge that was awkwardly placed along the side wall and taking up a lot of space. They knew right from the start that they wanted a larger range so that was one of our starting points as we began the design process. Also on our client’s wishlist was a more functional pantry space as their current pantry was more of a closet and felt too deep and lacking in interior fittings to be functional.
Our approach to the interior design itself starts with gathering as much information as possible from our clients - everything from their storage needs to their morning breakfast routine - we work to ensure we understand their needs fully as we move forward into creating a concept.
the kitchen
As we began working through the beginning of the design process - creating several layout scenarios and conceptualizing a colour palette - we were able to locate the fridge on the opposite side of the room where it’s much more hidden from view. That allowed us to use the wall opposite the sink for a storage wall with a counter for coffee area and buffet-style serving for family gatherings or a quiet weekend coffee for just the two of them. The tall bank of cabinets on the right hand side is designed to function as a ‘drop zone’ and accomodate lettermail and all the papers and notes that move in and out of our homes helping to keep clutter to a minimum.
Even though the goal was to brighten up this kitchen we still wanted to take a grounded approach to the colour palette. This space needed to feel fresh + updated but still feel like a part of the rest of the home and our clients were really drawn to a warm, classic colour palette. We achieved this by incorporating different wood tones in the flooring, hoodfan and furniture and selecting textured tile with a beautiful hand to it. An all-white kitchen can still feel warm if you layer in textures through mixing finishes + adding in a runner rug + some soft drapery.
One of our personal favourite details in this kitchen is the original antique butcher block that had been passed down from our clients’ family that we located in the island. The top was shallow enough where we didn’t need to sacrifice storage below and our clients enjoy using it as a chopping block just next to the stove. This heirloom piece was a joy to design into the kitchen, honouring their family by bringing their history into the future of this family home.
The side wall was originally home to their closet style pantry + fridge. With the fridge on the opposite wall, this section of cabinetry now offers our clients endless options and a large pantry and wall oven are tucked to one side. The open shelving is perfect for putting their favourite dinnerware pieces on display or styling with fresh greenery at Christmastime.
the dining room
The dining room already had great bones to work with - lots of east-facing natural light and a fair amount of space - however, with the home’s front door in between the kitchen and dining room, it felt a little exposed and lacking in definition so we did something we don’t often do… we added walls. We designed a wall on either side of a large opening to provide some protection from the elements and help define the dining room, as well as added decorative moulding to the walls to give the room dimension + interest - the perfect backdrop to long, lazy evenings at the table with family + friends.
Lighting is such an important element in any space and it’s something as designers we’re particularly fussy about. We like to give clients the flexibility to have different types of lighting in a room - either being all used at once or certain switches can be placed a dimmer switch and controlled to their exact preference. In this dining room, we added two wall sconces and the existing ceiling fan was replaced with a large chandelier. By adding sconces to the back wall of the dining room we were able to add to the ambience of the space, for those entertaining moments when overhead lighting feels too bright + direct.
Our clients elected to keep their gorgeous sideboard piece and current dining table which purposefully worked well with the new flooring we selected throughout. Adding patterned drapery and a fun area rug to the room lends it a certain amount of life, colour and interest as well.
Renovation projects are some of my favourite to work on because of the challenge they present. Our clients come to us with their lived experience in their home + what they would like to improve, and it’s often a lengthy wish-list. By helping to re-create their space we get the opportunity to improve their quality of life through thoughtful, function-first interior design that has been bespoke to their lifestyle and needs - both now and into the future. We’re so honoured for each and every family that we are able to work with and these lovely clients were no different!
